It's Been A Bad Year For Cap

...and if the new Alex Ross-designed look is any indication, things aren't getting better any time soon. To wit:

Look, the "classic" Cap costume we're all familiar with is patently ridiculous, over-the-top, and totally awesome.

This thing makes Captain America look like... well frankly it makes him look like U.S. Agent (which, for the uninitiated, is not a good thing).

I'm struggling with the point of all this, since it's been confirmed that this isn't Steve Rogers anyway. (Which pushes this even farther into U.S. Agent territory.)

The whole thing has a very Iron Spider-like smell to it, and that smell makes me vomit.

Isn't the original shield design on which they're riffing here the reason MLJ/Archie threatened a lawsuit against Marvel for ripping off their character called the Shield? In fact, to placate John Goldwater, Timely/Marvel changed Cap's shield to the circular design because Cap's original shield looked TOO much like Joel Higgins' Shield costume. This looks way more like the Shield than Captain America with no wings and the triangular design on the body. Isn't this a copyright violation? I'm sure Archie's lawyers will let us know! Marvel'll probably stand on "nobody ever heard of the Shield--it's just a tv show" even though Archie's published new material this year. Violating company copyrights and legally stomping all over them isn't a concern of ol' Alex Ross's, right? Hell, he's painting characters now at Dynamite that AC Comics has been publishing, copyrighting and trademarking for 20 years! Maybe he just likes making trouble!

See, I have faith here. Since Brubaker and Epting are still on the title, and Cap's book has done nothing but get better since his death, it'll be OK. This new costume looks like something a marketing exec would come up with if he was asked to make Cap look more "cool", and that's what it should be if they're going to try and introduce a "new" Cap. I have no doubt that Steve Rogers will be back in his familiar togs around the time of issue #50.

It just seems like Ross took the costumes of Cap, GL (Hal Jordan), and Citizen Steel... dropped them in a martini shaker and shook vigorously.

I really don't like it. It reminds me of the 90's when artists made characters "cool" by adding black to their costumes.

Ok, call me crazy, but I actually kinda like it. Probably because I never liked the old one *meh* Althouh I do think it would be a better fit for th Ultimate Version. And then, minus the wings. I always hated these.

the triangular design just rings puerto-rican flag to me.

This is CAPTAIN AMERICA. The ONLY colors should be red, white, and blue. This design makes him looks more like he's out to get someone than protecting the ideology of America.

Though, I am excited about the team...
